Swiatek, Gauff Win To Advance To Semifinals Of The Wta Finals

Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff have secured spots in the semifinals of the GNP Seguros WTA Finals held in Cancun, Mexico.

Gauff faced Marketa Vondrousova in a thrilling match, winning 5-7, 6-7(4), 6-3 during the final group play, ending Vondrousova's chances of reaching the semifinals.

Gauff's achievement is significant as she becomes the first teenager since 2009 to reach the final four of the year-end championships.

Swiatek confirmed her place as the group winner by defeating Ons Jabeur 6-1, 6-2, finishing the group stage with a perfect 3-0 record in the Chetumal Group.

On the upcoming Saturday, Swiatek will face No.1 seed Aryna Sabalenka, with the match potentially deciding the year-end No.1 ranking.

If Sabalenka wins, she will finish the year as No.1, but if Swiatek wins, she can only reclaim the top spot by winning the tournament.

This semifinal is a rematch of their encounter in Fort Worth last year, where Sabalenka won. They have met twice this season, with Swiatek winning in Stuttgart and Sabalenka in Madrid.

In the other semifinal, Coco Gauff will compete against Jessica Pegula, marking the first all-American semifinal at the WTA Finals since 2003.

Both players are making their semifinal debuts at the year-end tournament, a significant achievement for them.

This will be the third meeting this year between Gauff and Pegula, with Gauff winning on grass in Eastbourne and Pegula getting her revenge during her title run in Montreal.
